This past weekend we had two fantasy films released at the box office: “Inkheart”, based on the book by Cornelia Funke, and “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans”, the prequel to the two previous Underworld movies. Sadly, neither of the films topped the box office.
Underworld started off Friday night at number one, grossing $7.9 million that night, however, Paul Blart:Mall Cop took the number one spot for the weekend with $21.5 million. Underworld came in second overall at the box office with $20.7 million. This is not a bad number for the Underworld prequel-the first Underworld movie had a $21.8 million debut weekend and Underworld: Evolution in 2006 had a $26.9 million first weekend. Inkheart came in lower than expected, and much lower than hoped for. The movie started off the weekend with $2.1 million friday night and finished in seventh place overall for the weekend at $7.7 million. This of course does not bode well for hopes of an “Inkheart” sequel.
