After an exhaustive Internet searching effort, I have deciphered the truth and the fiction of the future for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie! As Disney had announced previously, Johnny Depp will star in the film as Captain Jack Sparrow and Jerry Bruckheimer has signed on to produce the film (he worked on the previous films as well) but that's about all that sounds true for this movie at this time-because it's all that Disney has said. Not that it has stopped many from speculating and spreading rumors about the much anticipated fourth film...
Recent rumors have included stories that Depp had signed a 55-59 (depending on which story you read) million dollar contract for the film, that Tim Burton would take over for Gore Verbinski as director, and that either Sacha Baron Cohen or Russell Brand would be playing Captain Jack Sparrow's brother. Pirates of the Caribbean writer Terry Rossio posted on the Wordplayer forums on October 9th saying: “For the record, none of the recent Pirates 4 rumors have any truth, including the so-called record 50 million dollar payday for Depp. Some pretty funny stuff, though. Sacha Cohen? Tim Burton? Studios are way too protective of their franchises for that sort of thing.” Of course, as a number of articles have pointed out, we can't assume they're all untrue because of a forum posting-but aren't they all a bit out there to be true? The point of the matter is that Disney has said nothing on this, and until they do, there's no reason to believe any of this hype. Currently, IMDB.com has Pirates of the Caribbean 4 down for a 2012 release, but with Johnny Depp currently signed on for a slew of movies (Alice In Wonderland, Lone Ranger, and Dark Shadows) 2012 is still anyone's guess.
