Wizard Rockumentary Premiere!

Interview by Faith McKay

We recently had the opprotunity to catch up with Mallory Schuyler, one of the twin sisters behind the Wizard Rockumentary on the day before their big premiere in their hometown of Spokane, WA. When we last talked to them, the sisters were still in full blown editing phase, and now the film is premiering at various events around the country.

FantasyIsLove.com:
How have people been reacting since announcing your upcoming premiere?

Mallory Schuyler
We've received a lot of support and have enjoyed sharing in the excitement with our friends, both here at home and online. Since the wizard rock community is spread all across the world, choosing a location for the premiere was difficult because no matter where we chose to host it, so many of the people involved wouldn't be able to attend. In the end, we knew that we had to have the premiere here in our hometown, that that would mean the most, and we've been overwhelmed with how much local support we have received.

FantasyIsLove.com:
How long did the final cut come to be?

Mallory Schuyler
The movie came out just over an hour and a half, which is feature-length and a bit long in terms of documentaries.

FantasyIsLove.com:
Has the movie turned out as you two had originally planned?

Mallory Schuyler
Yes and no. Obviously we had no way of knowing exactly what we'd end up with when we started filming in July of 2006. We were lucky to have captured a really magical moment in time. Documenting the fandom during the year leading up to the release of The Deathly Hallows is something that Megan and I will always remember with gratitude, and we are so proud that wizard rock grew into such a powerful force over the course of the year. When we started shooting the movie there were about thirty bands. Now there is over four hundred and fifty. Many of the bands had never had a show when we first interviewed them and later went on to perform nationally and internationally. As a whole, wizard rock has independently produced dozens of albums, raised thousands of dollars for charity, and progressed from internet obscurity (with the exception of Harry and the Potters) to getting international press and recognition from MTV and Canada's Much Music. When we were done shooting, we had over three days' worth of footage and dozens of stories that we could tell with it. If possible, I think that the movie tells a story even more amazing then we had imagined when we began.

FantasyIsLove.com:
How do you feel now that it's finally about to be shown to the world?

Mallory Schuyler
Excited. Relieved. Nervous. We're torn between bouncing off the walls in hyper childlike glee and collapsing where we stand from exhaustion. Most of all, we're looking forward to sharing the movie with everyone who was involved along the way, which in my mind is the entire Harry Potter fandom because the story wouldn't exist without every one of them, and that's magical.
