What's Happening with the Wheel of Time...

by Faith McKay

Robert Jordan passed away in 2007, but as with all writers, his work is never done. After his passing many many questions were raised about what would happen with the Wheel of Time series. Now that time has passed things are starting to unfold, and this article will hopefully catch you up.

Before his passing Robert Jordan had published eleven novels in the Wheel of Time Series and had reported that there would be one more novel to complete the series. In December 2007 Tor announced that Robert Jordan had left enough information about what should happen in the final novel that it could be completed, and a man named Brandon Sanderson would be finishing it.

Harriet McDougal, Robert Jordan’s editor and widow, contacted Sanderson herself about finishing the series. Jordan had left written notes and audio tapes outlining what would happen. Sanderson is a long time fan and seems honored and excited at this opporotunity. He has said that some parts of the novel were nearly finished by Jordan while others had a few paragraphs outlining a 20 page scene. Brandon Sanderson began writing the final novel with the working title A Memory of Light on March 26th, 2008 after studying previous books in the series and Jordan’s notes.

In fall 2009 Tor will be publishing the 12th book in the Wheel of Time series.

The tale begins as all in the series do with, “The Wheel of Time turns…”

The 12th book in the series is not the only Wheel of Time news to be popping up since Robert Jordan’s passing. In March 2005 Dabel Brother Publishing had published comics adapted from the novel “A New Spring”, the Wheel of Time prequel, in March 2005. It was recently announced that Dabel Brothers Publishing will be adapting the Wheel of Time series into graphic novels.

The deal was negotiated with Jordan’s agent Nat Sobel and Harriet McDougal, his editor and widow. The comic series will hopefully begin publication in December 2008 with the graphic novels being published in late 2009.
